24 hour Veterinary Hospitals in every district of Kerala
The Issue
The present situation of Veterinary Healthcare in our state is very pathetic. There are very few government veterinary hospitals in the state and very few veterinary doctors. Quality healthcare for animals is a necessity for every state. Most of the government veterinary hospitals function only from 10 am to 3 pm and do not function on any holidays. Even during the working days, there have been instances of the vets leaving the hospital by noon. Even emergency cases have to wait until the next day and if it is on weekends, till Monday, for the animal to get essential veterinary care.
Kerala is in urgent need of 24-hour veterinary hospitals in every district. There were orders for a night vet to be present in many hospitals around the state. Unfortunately, these orders have not been implemented and in most of those hospitals, the night vets do not even come to the hospital. A countless number of innocent animals have their lives at stake because of the callous attitude taken by the department.
When the animal is a rescued street animal, it is practically impossible to get good veterinary care. It is a really sad situation that in a state which boasts of 100% literacy and with such good health infrastructure, the condition of non-human living beings is not given due consideration. Animal welfare is not about increasing the milk yield in cows or the number of eggs laid by hens. It is about providing the fundamental rights that every living being deserves.
We humbly appeal, the Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan, please take this matter seriously and consider this in the development of the state.
