We need your help to tell major music festivals to move away from the biological hotspot at Yelgun (Byron Shire).
We think festivals can be great to attend and good for the local economy, but we don’t want to risk important environmental areas that likewise bring visitors and economic benefits. It could be a ‘win/win’ scenario. There are many alternative NSW locations where major music festivals could be held. They shouldn’t be held in areas like Yelgun that are designated for environmental protection. The importance of this area has been shown through Government Inquiries, and through the courts, and acknowledged by the NPWS.
Over 50 threatened species live in the locality of these festivals. Also the festival site divides a wildlife corridor that provides a link between the World Heritage parks of the Mt. Warning area and the coastal parks.
The NSW government is allowing 5 years of trial festivals to go ahead, but only if they can meet the government’s rules (conditions of consent). So far they have failed to meet a number of these rules, including major failures to keep the sound to the levels you required.
As Minister responsible for overseeing these trial festivals, you have the ability to stop these trials because the festivals are breaking your rules.
Please act to promote responsible music festivals in appropriate locations by ending these trials and telling these festivals to move.
