The Issue
This petition is to require the relevant Government Department and / or Private Entity as may be responsible to, with urgency, investigate and take such necessary remedial action as is warranted or justified for the immediate cleansing alternatively revitalizing and / or oxygenating and / or removing any impediment and / or obstruction in the water course way which has resulted in the substantial growth of hyacinth and / or other destructive plants and / or filth and / or dirt and / or degradation resulting in an unbearable smell and odor detrimental to the surrounding residence detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the surrounding residence, businesses and their personnel justifying immediate and urgent action.
Though the condition and circumstances of the dam are required to be investigated the community is of the view that a aggravating contributing factor is the overflow of sewerage into the dam and which may well be the primary cause of the stench and degradation.
It is also to be noted that in very close proximity to the dam is the Johannesburg Secondary School with a substantial student population and the health of the learners, educators and other staff are additionally a source of major concern.
This degradation is posing an environmental hazard and is having a huge impact on the bird and animal life in this eco system.
In addition the effects of Exposure to sewer gas runs the risk of Hydrogen Sulfide Poisoning which leads to coughing, shortness of breath, and irritation of the eyes, throat, nose, and respiratory system, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.
Community members have complained of these symptoms in the last few weeks.
Exposure to high levels can even result in immediate loss of consciousness.
