This is the letter we prepared, it would be great if you could help spread it by retweeting the petition, tagging @PaulBlomfieldMP Dear Madam/Sir We are writing in support of Ahmed Sedeeq, who is an Iraqi student at the University of Sheffield and has been detained in Morton Hall and at risk of being deported since Monday 18th December, 2017. Ahmed first came to the UK in late July 2011 to start his M.Sc. in advanced software engineering at the University of Sheffield. Upon completing his M.Sc. course, he returned back to his hometown Mosul, Iraq. He then got a PhD position at the department of Computer Science at the same university and applied for a student visa, with which he came back to the UK in May 2013. His PhD research is focused on advanced computer graphics. In 2014, with the rise of ISIS in Iraq and the capture of his hometown, Mosul the becoming the the capital of the so-called Islamic State, he knew his life would be in danger if he came back to Iraq and applied for an asylum in the UK. His case was rejected multiple times although he produced all the evidence needed to demonstrate he was in real danger, leading him to get a shortened student visa, and after miscommunication with the home office officers who initially informed him his visa was still valid, he ended up overstaying his visa and is now being held at Morton hall since Monday (18th of Dec). He has been informed that he is at risk of being sent back to Iraq at any time. His living conditions are appalling considering he has not committed any crime; he is locked up in a room with no toilet, he is allowed only 50 min of very slow internet per day, preventing him from communicating efficiently with his lawyer and supporters, and he was even refused lunch on Wednesday for no obvious reason. His father passed away recently because of the lack of the healthcare in their hometown and the occupation of the city which made the commuting impossible. He is under a lot of pressure and his mental well being is currently bad enough for us to be deeply worried about him. All his friends in Sheffield are supporting him and launched an online petition that has reached over 2,000 signatures in 24 hours, demonstrating how well appreciated Ahmed is and how unacceptable this case seems to the community. Indeed, Ahmed is a really nice and humble person, very selfless, passionate about computer science, and his life is genuinely in danger if he is sent back to Iraq. He's very openly an atheist, and has spoken out against radical Islamism multiple times, which means going back to Iraq would be a threat to his life. He's integrated very well with the western culture and he should have a chance of finishing his PhD studies here in the UK, for which he was self-funded and has already spent £57,000 on tuition fees. We believe Ahmed's situation should be reevaluated and that he should be allowed to finish his studies in the UK, based on his financial, professional and personal involvement in his PhD and in his integration to the Sheffield community.
