The Issue

I am deeply offended and disgusted by the double standards demonstrated by the WNBA in their handling of players' language and actions. Recently, Natasha Cloud, a player for the Chicago Sky used the word "gay" as a derogatory term. On August 21, 2026, after sex toys were thrown onto the court during a Chicago Sky game, Cloud repeatedly used the word "gay" as an insult, stating that it was "the gayest thing that you can do," and labeling the perpetrators as "gay to us," even calling on them to "come out."

Using an identity that is already marginalized in society as a pejorative only reinforces harmful stereotypes and worsens the struggles faced by the LGBTQ community. Similar language and actions have historically been condemned by major sports organizations, including the NBA, which has fined players such as LaMelo Ball ($100,000), Cam Thomas ($40,000), and Nikola Jokic for similar offenses. Yet, the WNBA has not imposed any consequences on Cloud for her inappropriate comments.

This inconsistency is not only offensive but perpetuates the idea that some individuals are exempt from accountability based on their status. No sports league should tolerate the use of discriminatory language, regardless of the speakers' intent or stature. Failure to act is a failure to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all fans and players.

We call on the WNBA to apply the same standards they expect from others in sports, issuing fines and suspensions for any player who uses derogatory language, including Natasha Cloud. This should not be an exceptional ask but rather a commitment to uphold equality and respect within the league and beyond.

Let us urge the WNBA to stand firm against all forms of discriminatory language by signing this petition. By doing so, we can establish a precedent that maintains a zero-tolerance policy for derogatory remarks and ensures that all athletes are held accountable for their words and actions.
