Hold the White House Accountable for Stoking Fear, Hate, and Exploiting Artists Online
The Issue
In a time when our country faces deep division and urgent challenges, the official social media accounts of the Trump White House and Department of Homeland Security have chosen to stoke cruelty and division instead of offering leadership. Instead of respectful, fact-based communication, these government accounts are now sharing memes, AI-generated art, and viral videos that mock and dehumanize immigrants—turning real human suffering into a punchline.
One post promoted a deportation flight as “ASMR: Illegal Alien Deportation,” pairing the rattling of handcuffs with the calming tone of internet trend videos. Another used artificial intelligence to recreate the image of a Dominican woman crying during her arrest, rendered in the cartoon style of Studio Ghibli. Rather than respond to concerns with empathy or responsibility, officials doubled down, repeating: “The memes will continue.”
But it doesn’t stop at cruelty. These same government accounts are also misusing the copyrighted work of artists—without permission and often against the artists’ values. Paintings, songs, and even trending TikTok audios have been co-opted to promote detention centers and armed ICE raids. Musicians like Jess Glynne and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and painters like Morgan Weistling, have all publicly condemned the government’s use of their work in messaging they consider hateful, violent, or unconstitutional.
This isn’t harmless internet humor. It’s state-sponsored propaganda that mocks vulnerable communities, misuses creative work, and spreads a message of exclusion and fear—under the official seal of the U.S. government.
We call on the White House and DHS to immediately remove all social media content that dehumanizes immigrants or exploits the work of artists without consent. Public communication from our government should reflect the dignity, fairness, and humanity that Americans deserve—not internet trolling at the expense of justice.
Sign this petition if you believe our government should lead with compassion—not cruelty.
