The Issue

**IF THE SAW BOARD HAD A PUBLICLY AVAILABLE EMAIL ADDRESS, AS IS REQUIRED BY THEIR NONPROFIT STATUS, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AN EMAIL. AS OF JUNE 17TH, 2026 THERE IS NONE.**

We, the undersigned, demand that the Board of Directors for the Sequential Artists Workshop perform their duty of oversight in the matter of Georgia Webber’s dismissal at the hands of Executive Director Tom Hart.

Georgia is a multiply disabled artist and teacher who has been working with Tom and SAW since 2021.

At the start of 2026, Georgia had a year-long contract with SAW to produce weekly podcast episodes, guaranteeing her $1100 USD per month until December 15th, 2026. She was also in the midst of drafting a proper contract for her upcoming teaching program, the Graphic Medicine Murmuration, which was set to run March 21st to September 21st, with a guaranteed hourly rate and weekly hours, securing her an additional $1100 USD per month for the months of the contract, with 40 hours of preparation for the program at the rate of $45 USD/hour.

These funds, and Georgia’s working relationship with SAW, were all at the mercy of Executive Director Tom Hart. When she requested a meeting to discuss her concerns about Tom’s lack of accountability in their work on the podcast, Tom did not reply to Georgia's concerns, nor her meeting request. Instead, he cancelled her teaching contract.

In the very same message that cancelled months of Georgia's work and income, Tom speaks glowingly about the quality of her work, and that the podcasting contract will not be affected by this decision.

There was no process or procedure offered to resolve this dispute, and mediation (required by the podcasting contract) was not offered until Georgia insisted three separate times, and two other SAW employees stepped in.

All evidence is available for anyone to review upon written request: hello@drawingtheinsideout.ca.

There is no excuse for the lack of accountability and oversight by the Board of Directors.

We demand that the SAW Board of Directors fulfill its mission statement:

At SAW we believe in accountability to those we serve”

·       Tom and the SAW Board have not taken any accountability for his actions, and their lack of participation

At SAW, students and teachers should be able to work and learn together, to have friendships, and be candid with one another”

·       Georgia’s candidness of raising her concerns resulted in the immediate cancellation of a primary source of income

Responding to direct and indirect feedback or complaints”

·       Georgia herself, with the help of a friend, wrote a letter to the SAW Board of Directors on March 14th, and as of June 14th, she has received no acknowledgement of receipt, nor any written reply from the Board.

Is this the standard to which SAW operates as an organization?

Is it right for Georgia to have already suffered so severely, that she should get no support or compensation for enduring this circumstance entirely created by SAW’s lack of responsibility?

A close friend of Georgia has this to say:

“I cannot begin to emphasize enough the distress that Georgia has been under over the past 6 months. This conflict has impacted every single aspect of her life, and I am first hand watching her fall to pieces because SAW has no support in place to protect their teachers from the ramifications of Tom just suddenly changing his mind.”

From Georgia herself:

“I have been stressed beyond belief by this betrayal of my friendship and working relationship with Tom, and the values that I signed onto at SAW.  Due to Tom's decision to cancel my work, I am now exhausting my physical, emotional, and financial wellbeing as I strive to replace the income he took away, hold him to account without any institutional procedures to do so, and take care of worsening physical symptoms that compound with time . Through mediation, Tom apologized for the breakdown in communication, but refused to do the one thing I have been asking for from the start: to admit his wrongdoing, apologize, and work with me on direct solutions.”

Georgia has made a list of possible avenues of resolution:

  • SAW offers a formal, written apology for allowing this to happen
  • SAW creates policies, contracts, and procedures to protect the artists, employees, students, and the organization equally
  • Pay Georgia's teaching contract in full: $8820 USD
  • Pay for the psychology and physical therapy appointments needed to recover from this experience for the next 3 months, up to $3000 USD
  • Pay the remainder of her current podcasting contract, dissolving the contract and all obligations Georgia has to SAW (outlined in the exit strategy document provided by Georgia during mediation)
  • Conduct a formal investigation into Tom's conduct as Executive Director, and if necessary, remove Tom Hart from his position

Since the failure of mediation, Georgia has received no further communication, remuneration, or support from SAW.

As a comics community, we all strive to do better than the profound mismanagement, financial abuse, and burden on the harmed that is evident in the example set by Tom Hart and SAW in their treatment of Georgia Webber.

At every step of the extensive process that Georgia drove forward to find true resolution in this matter, Tom Hart and the SAW Board of Directors could have shown true leadership by taking full accountability for the mistakes they made. They could have worked with Georgia towards repair, and in doing so, founded a stronger relationship not only with Georgia herself, but with SAW’s foundational values and the comics community as a whole.

Instead, Tom Hart and SAW have declined any responsibility, and in doing so, replicated the systemic abuse faced by disabled individuals confronting the oppressive powers that affect their lives and wellbeing.

We believe SAW can and MUST do better. There is no repair without truth, and there is no truth without accountability.

We demand that SAW take full accountability without hesitation or delay.

We stand with Georgia Webber.
