Hold The Renaissance Accountable for Unsafe and Neglected Conditions
The Issue
To: The Board of Directors, The Renaissance Co-op (130 Lenox Avenue)
We, the undersigned residents and concerned individuals, are writing to express our deep frustration over the severe, ongoing neglect of our building’s exterior grounds.
Last year, residents had to petition the board just to address basic sidewalk overgrowth. Today, the conditions on 117th Street have returned and deteriorated further. What should be a clean, safe community space has degraded to the point where residents and neighborhood dog walkers now refer to the street as “dog poo alley.”
The current conditions pose direct health, safety, and curb-appeal issues:
- Escalating Overgrowth & Litter: Tree pits and green spaces remain overgrown with weeds, hiding accumulated trash, dog waste, and physical hazards.
- Vandalism & Blight: Unaddressed graffiti not only deepens the slum-like appearance of our property, but it also signals neglect and actively invites further vandalism.
- Landscaping Neglect: Two of the four boxwoods flanking our main entrance are dead, creating a run-down appearance for anyone entering the building.
- Unacceptable Standards: Nearby NYCHA public housing properties consistently maintain their grounds with pride. Our co-op should, at a minimum, match those basic standards rather than allowing our property to slip further into disrepair.
As residents and concerned individuals who care about this community, we believe the board must fulfill its obligation to maintain the building’s exterior and uphold city regulations regarding sidewalk cleanliness.
We urge the board to take the following immediate actions:
- Clear and Clean 116th Street, 117th Street and Lenox Ave: Remove all weeds, trash, and pet waste from tree pits and sidewalk borders, and establish a regular sanitation schedule.
- Remove Graffiti & Prevent Further Vandalism: Immediately clean or paint over the new graffiti to prevent additional taggers from targeting the building.
- Restore Front Landscaping: Remove the two dead boxwood shrubs at the entrance and replace them with healthy greenery.
We expect prompt, visible action to restore safety, cleanliness, and dignity to our community.
