The Issue

Dakota Stevens, a bright light in this world, was tragically taken from us far too soon. Dakota's death was not just a tragedy; it was an avoidable outcome of a system that failed him. The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), tasked with protecting children like Dakota, must be held accountable for deaths caused by foster families.

In the United States alone, approximately 1,700 children die due to child abuse and neglect each year (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services). A significant portion of these deaths occur within the foster care system - a system that is supposed to provide safety and security for vulnerable children.

We demand justice for Dakota Stevens and all other victims who have suffered under this flawed system. We call on lawmakers to hold DCFS accountable for their negligence by implementing stricter oversight measures on foster families.

Moreover, we urge DCFS to improve their training programs. Current training is evidently inadequate as evidenced by the tragic death toll. More comprehensive classes should be introduced focusing on child psychology, trauma-informed care techniques and emergency response skills among others.

The loss of one child is one too many. Let's ensure no more innocent lives are lost due to systemic failures in our foster care system. Please sign this petition today demanding accountability from DCFS and improved training standards for foster parents.
