Hold Sheriff's department accountable for releasing violent abuser hours prior to homicide
The Issue
My name is Bennet Chapple. My mom, Amethyst Stephenson was murdered by her estranged husband on Sunday morning, February 8th, 2026.
They had been going through a divorce since he was often emotionally abusive and threatening towards other members of the household. She has a peace order against him under the reasoning of domestic violence.
Alexander Stephenson was arrested the night prior after a bystander witnessed him physically abusing his two minor children.
Amethyst picked up the kids, who very much viewed her as a mother. Her attorney spoke to the department, who agreed to keep Alex in custody until Monday morning. (02/09/2026)
Alex was released on Sunday morning. Hours after he was released he snuck into the home where Amythest, her eldest son, and his children were staying. He stabbed her several times and she had passed away by the time the paramedics had arrived.
Alexander also had several ex wives and a documented history of violence. Carroll County Sheriff's department had a more than adequate sum of evidence that he was a threat to our family.
We are hoping to pursue legal action in the form of a wrongful death lawsuit.
