The Issue

In our society, when we elect individuals into office, we undertake a responsibility to uphold democratic values and fairness for all constituents. Unfortunately, there are times when elected officials may not only disregard these principles, but they also publicly threaten the very fabric of justice and equality. This issue hits close to home because each and every one of us, regardless of our political affiliation, race, or nationality, is at risk of perpetuating a system that has historically been violent and oppressive. We have seen the dire effects of discriminatory rhetoric in places like the US, where a structure of oppression has been fortified and normalized.

Indigenous communities have long suffered from systemic and institutionalized oppression. Now, their reconciliation efforts are being threatened by the racist speech of someone who should be working to mend these relationships, not destroy them. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) represents a global commitment to support the rights and dignity of Indigenous peoples; yet, these very efforts are undermined by a councilman whose words and actions are steeped in racism and hate.

Statistics and research show that hate speech contributes to increased violence and discrimination against marginalized groups. According to numerous studies, hateful rhetoric can incite violence, perpetuating cycles of abuse and fear. As members of humanity, we must draw a line and say no more to this type of behaviour and language, especially from those in positions of power.

It's our responsibility to demand accountability and change. Elected officials should represent all constituents fairly and equitably. We cannot stand idle while hurtful words and blatant racism continue to dismantle years of reconciliation and hard work.

Join me in calling for the removal of this councilman, Bill Dennis, from office and hold our leaders accountable for their public racism. Let us send a clear message that hate speech and discrimination have no place in our democracy. Please sign this petition to stand with Indigenous communities and support justice, equality, and reconciliation.
