Hold Nobel Laureate Philip Dybvig at WashU Accountable

Over one year ago, at least seven students spoke of sexual harassment perpetrated by Nobel Laureate and Professor Philip Dybvig at Washington University in St. Louis. As of now, Professor Dybvig is teaching three classes in Olin Business School in Spring 2024.

National and local news outlets including Bloomberg News, the Hill, Riverfront Times, and the St. Louis Dispatch reported improper sexual advancements, including unwanted flirtatious messages, kissing, and physical touch. Media reported that the university Title IX Office questioned Professor Dybvig and that he went on leave. However, Professor Dybvig is returning to teach in Spring 2024 and WashU has failed to communicate any accountability measures with the student body at large.

WashU has failed to transparently communicate measures to hold Professor Dybvig accountable or to protect students from further harm, demonstrating a complete disregard for survivors harmed by Professor Dybvig, and a lack of commitment to prioritize student safety.

In response to seven students speaking about sexual harassment perpetrated by Professor Dybvig, we demand the following from the university:

1) Professor Dybvig’s immediate return to academic leave, relieving him of any and all teaching obligations and student interactions.

Starting Spring 2024, Professor Dybvig is set to teach classes with a total of over 100 students. Given that multiple students have spoken about sexual harassment from Professor Dybvig, this endangers the safety of all students interacting with Professor Dybvig.

We demand that the university relieve Professor Dybvig of any teaching obligations by rescinding his course offerings for the Spring 2024 semester, effective immediately.

2) Subsequently fire Professor Dybvig, communicating with the student body the university processes used to hold Dybvig accountable.

The university has a responsibility to prioritize their students’ safety over prestige. Following placing him on leave, we demand that the university fire Professor Dybvig. The university should communicate with the student body the university processes, whether within the Title IX Office, Human Resources or elsewhere, used to hold Professor Dybvig accountable to demystify the reporting procedure to the extent possible while protecting survivors’ privacy.

3) Permit survivors to retroactively withdraw from Professor Dybvig’s classes without facing negative repercussions.

Students who experienced sexual harassment perpetrated by Professor Dybvig while taking a class taught by him should be permitted to retroactively withdraw from the class without it appearing on their transcript or harming their academic record. Survivors should not be required to lodge a formal complaint in order to withdraw. The university should communicate this allowance to all students previously and presently enrolled in classes taught by Professor Dybvig.

4) Institute language access plans in the Gender Equity and Title IX Compliance Office.

The survivors who spoke of sexual harassment by Professor Dybvig were international students from China. In the aftermath of the news headlines, #MeToo WashU worked with students volunteering as translators to effectively communicate resources with students whose first language is not English. The gap of in-language communication should be filled by the university, not students.

We demand that the Provost’s Office work with the Office of International Student Engagement to determine the top five non-English languages spoken at WashU, and translate and disseminate all digital and print material from the Gender Equity and Title IX Compliance Office (GETIXCO) to these languages. Additionally, we demand that the university institute language access plans by outlining procedures to have translators for students who prefer non-English languages when visiting GETIXCO. Information on who translators are, translators’ commitment to confidentiality, and languages offered should be publicly advertised on the GETIXCO website.

There is nothing noble about a professor who violates students’ autonomy and safety, and nothing noble about an institution who continues to harbor professors who do so. WashU must prioritize our safety over the prestige of any Nobel Laureate. WashU must demonstrate its commitment to believing survivors and protecting students from further sexual violence. If the university fails to meet these demands by February 12, we will take matters into our own hands.

WashU, believe #MeToo. Protect #MeToo. We will continue advocating for survivors’ needs and students’ safety until no more students on this campus have to utter the words #MeToo.
