The Issue

The Miss Universe pageant claims to empower women — yet this week, the world watched as that promise was broken.

During a pre-pageant event in Thailand, Miss Universe Thailand director Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly berated Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, in front of dozens of contestants.

He reportedly called her “dumb,” raised his voice when she tried to respond, and threatened to disqualify contestants who stood with her.

When Ms. Bosch defended herself, he called security to intimidate participants. Many contestants — including reigning Miss Universe Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark — walked out in protest.

The livestreamed video showed exactly what Miss Universe should never stand for: humiliation, intimidation, and public disrespect toward women who were promised a platform of empowerment.

The Miss Universe Organisation (MUO) condemned Mr. Nawat’s “malicious” behavior and announced plans to limit his role — but that is not enough. Real accountability means meaningful action.

We call on MUO President Raul Rocha and the Miss Universe Organisation to:

  • Immediately remove Miss Universe Thailand director Nawat Itsaragrisil from his position and bar him from future involvement with any MUO-affiliated events.
  • Publicly commit to a zero-tolerance policy against harassment, humiliation, or intimidation of contestants by pageant officials or directors.
  • Create an independent ethics and conduct board to investigate complaints and enforce accountability across all national franchises.
  • Require annual anti-harassment and ethics training for all pageant directors and staff.
  • Guarantee protection for any contestant who speaks out against mistreatment.

Pageants should uplift women — not silence or shame them. Every contestant, no matter her nationality, deserves dignity, respect, and a safe space to shine.

This is not just about Miss Mexico. It’s about protecting every woman who steps onto that stage.

Sign now to demand that the Miss Universe Organisation remove Nawat Itsaragrisil and uphold its own promise to empower, not humiliate, women.
