The Issue

Communities in Regina are being threatened by negligence and the indifference of slumlord owners. A big offender in Cathedral, and other parts of Regina, is Supreme Development.

This company lets properties erode, it fails to take accountability for the actions of their tenants even after legal and community interventions, it ignores requests from neighbours to address problems, and they've been on the receiving end of several, unfavourable decisions by the Saskatchewan Office of Residential Tenancies. In some instances, Supreme properties are hubs for gang activity, drug and weapons offences, yet they do nothing to improve the situation.

Let's force Supreme, and other landlords, to do better.

First, demand that Supreme sell it's current holdings and leave the community if it can't manage their properties or their tenants. Homes that were once vibrant parts of a neighbourhood have fallen into disrepair since Supreme took over. From there the City might consider adding the property or empty lot into its municipal land bank, and developed into safer, more vibrant use.

Second, demand Regina City Council institute a landlord / rental registry. This would ensure that being a landlord is an earned right that can be taken away. It doesn't have to be costly or onerous. A publicly accessible landlord registry would ensure transparency and allow tenants to make informed decisions about where they live. Furthermore, it would provide the city with the means to monitor rental properties, ensuring compliance with housing codes and standards. No license = no tenants.

It's time for our city and landlords to prioritize the well-being of its citizens. By signing this petition, you are standing up for safe, healthy, and just housing standards for all members of our community. Together, we can ensure that property owners are accountable.
