Hold Jennifer Martin accountable for transphobic comment

Hold Jennifer Martin accountable for transphobic comment
The Issue
On December 20th, in a local Facebook women’s networking group, a request was made to support and provide resources for transgender individuals. Instead of receiving the inclusive environment that was sought, a harmful and dismissive comment was posted: “there’s no such thing as a transgender son.” Such statements are not only distressing but fundamentally dismissive of the lived experiences and identities of countless transgender individuals in our communities.
The individual responsible for this comment has been identified as Jennifer Martin, the Executive Director of Shop Local Raleigh and Brewgaloo. This revelation is deeply concerning, particularly given her influential role in these organizations that are pivotal to fostering community and inclusivity in Raleigh. As someone who holds a position of influence, Jennifer Martin’s words carry weight, and this kind of public discourse can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and discrimination against transgender people.
Transgender individuals deserve respect and recognition, just like anyone else. Statements that undermine their existence contribute to a culture of exclusion and prejudice. It is crucial that leaders in our community set a positive example and champion the values of diversity and inclusivity.
As a community of small businesses, many of whom pay annual membership fees to Shop Local Raleigh, we are calling on Shop Local Raleigh to hold Jennifer Martin accountable for her actions. This should include a formal apology, mandatory sensitivity training, financial support for one of our local organizations who provide direct aid to trans youth and any other corrective actions deemed appropriate by SLR. Every person, regardless of their gender identity should feel seen and supported by the communities they belong to.
Please sign this petition to urge Shop Local Raleigh to take immediate and decisive action. Let's stand together in support of our transgender friends, family, and neighbours, ensuring that all voices in Raleigh are heard and respected.
