Hold FREEDOM Accountable: Tell the CEO to Reduce Non-Recyclable Packaging

Hold FREEDOM Accountable: Tell the CEO to Reduce Non-Recyclable Packaging

The issue

Non-recyclable packaging waste has a significant and detrimental impact on the environment in Australia.

Materials like styrofoam, plastic films, and certain mixed-materials are not biodegradable, meaning they persist in landfills for centuries. Australia is surrounded by ocean, and much of its waste, especially plastics and non-recyclable packaging, ends up in the water. According to studies, an estimated 130,000 tonnes of plastic waste enter Australian waters annually, harming marine life. Animals like turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals often ingest or become entangled in plastic, leading to injury, suffocation, or death. Some of these plastics also break down into microplastics, which enter the food chain, potentially affecting human health. Furthermore, non-recyclable materials such as styrofoam can release harmful chemicals when they degrade or are improperly disposed of. These chemicals can leach into the soil, pollute water sources, and harm ecosystems. In some cases, when these materials are incinerated, they can release toxic gases, contributing to air pollution and climate change.

I was disappointed to find that, despite FREEDOM's claims of sustainable practices on their website, my experience with purchasing a couple of furniture pieces from their company proved these claims to be misleading. The items were packaged with an excessive amount of styrofoam, the type that breaks into small particles and disperses into the environment, contributing to further environmental harm.

PLEASE sign this petition to hold FREEDOM accountable for their sustainability claims. We urge the CEO, BLAINE CALLARD, to take immediate action and ensure that the company adopts truly sustainable practices, starting with reducing the use of harmful, non-recyclable packaging materials. Your signature will help push for a change that prioritizes both the environment and the integrity of the brand. Let’s work together to encourage Freedom to follow through on their promises and make a real difference to Australia’s natural beauty, biodiversity, and overall environmental health.
