As a passionate football (or soccer) fan, I was heartbroken to witness the series of blatant incorrect calls by French referee Francois Letexier during the Argentina versus Egypt match in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. These decisions were not just simple errors; they highlighted a deeper, more concerning issue of corruption within FIFA.

The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle of international football, a celebration of the sport's rich history and global appeal. It's an event millions eagerly anticipate to see exceptional talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship. However, the integrity of this prestigious tournament is at stake if we allow corrupt practices to undermine fair play.

The Argentina vs. Egypt match is a glaring example. Francois Letexier's questionable decisions included awarding unjust penalties, ignoring evident fouls, and allowing a wrongly-positioned goal, favoring one side over the other. Such actions not only tarnish the reputation of the World Cup but also betray millions of fans worldwide, who trust in the sport's fairness.

Egypt scored a 2nd goal in the 59 minute, which was then ultimately ruled out by the referee after VAR intervention, which brought the referee to the screen for review, for an alleged soft foul in the build up to the goal all the way from the other end of the field.  Yet in the 92 minute there was a goal by Argentina, and there were 2 very clear fouls in the buildup and there wasn’t even VAR intervention even after a reply clearly showed a penalty call that was dismissed by the referee without any review and neither of those fouls were reviewed and VAR intervention was not even reviewed by the referee. 

FIFA, as the governing body of football, must uphold the integrity of the game. Transparency and accountability should be at the forefront of their operations, ensuring all referees maintain impartiality and fairness. This entails a review of the decisions made during this match, and if necessary, stringent measures should be taken against those found guilty of malpractice, including suspension or permanent removal of referees involved.

Moreover, FIFA should implement more robust and transparent mechanisms for vetting and monitoring referees, leveraging technology to aid in decision-making, and providing continuous training on ethics and fairness. By doing so, FIFA would not only be taking a significant step to safeguard the integrity of the World Cup but also restoring faith in millions of fans like me who watch and cherish the sport.

Let us come together to demand FIFA to take decisive actions and ensure that the spirit of fair play prevails in football. Sign this petition to hold FIFA accountable and preserve the integrity of the World Cup, and demand that there were clear violations of the rules of the beautiful game, and that the fairness of the game was clearly shown to not be applicable in that match. Given that this game and only the calls against Egypt were reviewed and many alleged fouls by the Argentine players were blindly dismissed and not even looked at. Sign this petition regardless of nationality, only as a cry out to FIFA, and demand that this referee be disciplined and reviewed and the match to be replayed by neutral and thoroughly vetted match officials. This is the right thing to do.
