Hold FCPS Accountable: Taxpayers demand Investigation, Transparency, and Reparations

The Issue

Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." These words remind us that when injustice is allowed to persist, it erodes trust in our institutions and harms us all.

We call on Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) to conduct an independent investigation into the Hayfield Secondary School football scandal and hold those responsible accountable. The lack of transparency and leadership in addressing this crisis has harmed students, families, and staff while diminishing trust in FCPS. This petition demands justice, integrity, and a commitment to rebuilding trust within our community.

Who is Impacted and Why?

The recent football scandal at Hayfield Secondary School highlights a systemic failure in a district that claims to uphold values of excellence, equity, and opportunity. The actions and inactions of Superintendent Michelle Reid, Region 6 Assistant Superintendent Michelle Boyd, Hayfield Football Coach Daryl Overton, Hayfield Principal Darin Thompson, and (former?) Hayfield Director of Student Activities Monty Fritts have:

  • Harmed students and families in Fairfax and Prince William County, undermining their trust in school leadership.
  • Punished or ignored staff members, athletes, and their families who took risks to do the right thing.
  • Failed taxpayers, who deserve a school system that prioritizes integrity over winning at all costs.

FCPS leadership has prioritized damage control over accountability. This toxic culture has diminished the reputation of Fairfax County Public Schools and harmed those who live and lead with integrity.

The Failure of FCPS Leadership

Superintendent Michelle Reid’s response to this crisis has been ineffective and condescending. Instead of taking responsibility, she has:

  • Deflected blame onto others, including VHSL, existing policies, and lack of information.
  • Focused on future reviews instead of addressing how this scandal was handled since early 2024.

Meanwhile, the Fairfax County School Board has rewarded this failure by renewing Reid’s contract—two years before it expired—and increasing her salary to $424,000 with a $12,000 annual car allowance. To put this in perspective:

  • Reid now earns more than the Governor of Virginia and the Vice President of the United States.
  • Her salary exceeds that of the Chancellor of New York City Public Schools, a district six times the size of FCPS.

This level of compensation is unjustifiable for a leader who has failed to act decisively or transparently during a crisis that has harmed students and the community.

What is at Stake?

If this scandal goes unresolved, it sets a dangerous precedent for corruption and irresponsibility within FCPS. By failing to address these issues:

  • FCPS teaches students that unethical behavior and rule-breaking are acceptable if you win.
  • Trust in the school system erodes, creating more victims and protecting those in power.
  • Taxpayers lose faith in their ability to demand accountability from public institutions.

The Hayfield football team only withdrew from the playoffs when incriminating text messages came to light, revealing a deliberate attempt to evade accountability. Without intervention, this scandal will continue to undermine the values FCPS claims to stand for: integrity, equity, and excellence.

Why Taxpayers Must Act Now

Our students need to know that integrity and honor matter more than winning. When local leaders prioritize power and greed over transparency, they teach dangerous lessons to the next generation.

Holding those in power accountable is not punitive; it is an opportunity to grow, learn, and rebuild trust. By demanding transparency and justice, we can:

  • Establish a stronger, more trustworthy system that values community over personal gain.
  • Teach students the importance of integrity, respect, and accountability.
  • Create a culture of responsibility where leaders repair the harm they have caused—or step aside.

Our Call to Action

We demand:

  • An independent, external investigation into the handling of the Hayfield football scandal starting in January 2024. The independent investigation must not be managed or influenced by any FCPS personnel or entities with a conflict of interest. An oversight board should be established to oversee the investigation to ensure transparency and integrity. This board should consist of FCPS constituents and community members with the appropriate skills and expertise to guide and manage the investigation process, ensuring it is conducted transparently, honestly, and without bias.

  • Accountability for all involved, including Superintendent Michelle Reid, Principal Darin Thompson, Athletics Director Monty Fritts, Football Coach Daryl Overton, Region 6 Assistant Superintendent Michelle Boyd (who conducted the initial investigation), and the FCPS school board members who voted against an independent investigation at the August FCPS School Board meeting.

  • A public commitment to rebuild trust. This plan will include clear, actionable steps to repair the harm caused to those affected by this scandal. Those harmed include, but are not limited to, The Freedom High School Community. The Robinson Secondary School Community. The Region 6C Football Community. The former Hayfield Football Coach, Said Aziz. The former Hayfield DSS. The Hayfield Special Ed teachers. The former Hayfield Security Supervisor. The Students, families, and staff who were retaliated against (e.g., Regina Dorsey, and her son). The FCPS taxpayers who elect and fund school board members. All other FCPS staff and students who have suffered due to this misconduct.

Together, we can demonstrate that integrity, justice, and care for the entire community matter more than winning. Let us show our students and leaders that corruption will not go unchecked and that accountability is essential for a thriving and healthy community.
