Hold City of Abq Accountable, Mandate Rapid Response in Emergencies involving Service Dogs
The Issue
On a normal day, Rose's service dog, Ivy, was her comfort and closest friend. That was until tragedy struck when there was an explosion that damaged their house & garage. Ivy was trapped inside the garage While the city failed to respond in a timely matter - which could have saved the life of this service dog, beloved pet, and life! Almost two heart-wrenching weeks passed while Ivy perished slowly in pain, all because the city did not prioritize the life of a service dog and take this situation as seriously as they should have.
It's not just about Ivy – it's about all service dogs and pets in Albuquerque who are viewed with little to no value or respect, and not taken seriously. It is our moral and ethical responsibility to ensure that animals, especially service dogs that contribute so much to our community, are treated with the same urgency as their human counterparts during emergencies.
In recent years, the city's response rate to emergencies has been slow, leaving many vulnerable residents in precarious situations. Beyond anecdote, the National Pet Owners Survey estimates that 67% of households in the U.S have pets (American Pet Products Association, 2019-2020). With such numbers, it is unthinkable that pets' lives during emergencies are not taken with the utmost seriousness.
This is a call to the city of Albuquerque to conduct a complete review of their emergency response protocols and make necessary changes to prioritize and protect the lives of service dogs and other pets. Anything short of this reveals a lack of understanding of the essence of our beloved pets and their contribution to our lives.
We implore the citizens of Albuquerque to stand with us on this issue. Only then can we ensure that the tragedy that befell Ivy and her owner doesn't repeat itself. Please sign this petition to better our community and ensure the safety of our service dogs and other pets. We'd like this change to be called Ivy's Law.
