Hold businesses operating in Australia accountable for their environmental impact

The issue

My mission is to hold companies and businesses in Australia accountable for their environmental footprint. Not just the Australian owned companies, but all companies that operate in Australia, regardless of ownership.

I want stricter rules about who needs sustainability policies (such as creating criteria for which businesses need these rules), what they must entail (what the affected businesses have to do), and when they must be completed by. Many businesses have written their own sustainability policies that are vague and unclear, missing actionable timelines, and making it easy for companies to find loopholes and delay the action. I want this to change. The government needs to put rules in place saying that companies need to be:

  1. entirely renewable energy powered by 2027
  2. cutting down on plastic use by at least 50% - baseline from 2020, by 2027
  3. Offsetting all the CO2 they produce (carbon-neutral) by 2030
  4. 100% single use plastic free by 2030
  5. packaging all fruit and vegetables/fresh produce in their natural skins, not plastic by 2027
  6. packaging over 50% of their total products in compostable, recyclable, reusable, non-plastic alternatives, e.g. paper by 2030
  7. offering plastic packaging free alternatives for common products e.g. toothpaste in local shops, not just specialist ones by 2030

Lastly, they must have a clear sustainability plan with actionable steps that are assigned to a person and a timeframe to ensure they happen.
