Hold Bullies Accountable for Their Actions Regardless of Victim's Ability to Testify

Hold Bullies Accountable for Their Actions Regardless of Victim's Ability to Testify
The Issue
I am deeply pained to narrate the story - reflected in countless households across the country every day. Families are torn apart as they lose their loved ones to relentless bullying, some being pushed so far as to take their own lives. The trauma of that loss is unimaginably compounded by the uphill struggle we have to face just to persuade the court to examine the case, let alone secure justice. With the tragic absence of the victim, it can feel like the criminally involved parties escape without appropriate penalties. This needs to change.
As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people aged 10-24, and those who are bullied are at an increased risk for self-harm. Given this reality, it is illogical and inhumane that the investigation into these heartbreaking situations is often hindered or influenced by the victim's ability to testify.
We urgently call for legislation that dictates that in such cases where the victim cannot speak for themselves, it doesn't alter the course of a fair investigation or the deserved verdict. We understand that these are complex issues; however, doing nothing is not an option when we are losing too many; it is time to hold all parties involved accountable.
This petition pleads with lawmakers to instigate fundamental change. The moment bullying is brought to the attention of authorities and verified, we need to see immediate action, and those found guilty should be criminally charged as adults, given the grave consequences of their actions. Ensuring accountability is the first step towards deterrence and eventually ending the tragic cycle of bullying.
We cannot bring back those whom we have lost, but we can strive to prevent more needless deaths. Time is ticking rapidly for those living in fear and pain right now. Please, sign this petition and lend your voice to this crucial cause.
