Hold Apple Accountable for Biased News Promotion

The Issue

Nearly half of voting-age Americans use an iPhone. Apple News comes pre-installed on those devices, making it one of the most influential news platforms in the country.

A recent analysis by the Media Research Center found that, during a one-month period in January, 440 out of 620 featured Apple News stories came from outlets rated as left-leaning by AllSides, while zero came from outlets rated as right-leaning. Apple has stated that users can customize their feeds and that the app includes access to thousands of publications. But when it comes to the prominently featured “Top Stories” that millions see by default, the study raises concerns about bias and viewpoint balance.

Americans of all political beliefs depend on major tech platforms to provide fair access to information. Whether someone leans conservative, liberal, or somewhere in between, we should all agree that no single perspective should dominate a curated news feed that reaches millions by default.

We call on Apple CEO Tim Cook and the Apple News editorial leadership to publicly explain how featured stories are selected and to commit to balanced representation of credible outlets across the political spectrum in their curated Top Stories.

A healthy democracy depends on open debate and access to diverse viewpoints. Apple has the opportunity to lead by example—by ensuring its news platform reflects the full range of perspectives held by the American public.

If you believe powerful tech companies should curate news responsibly and fairly, regardless of political viewpoint, add your name and ask Apple to commit to balanced news amplification now.
