Hobsons Bay: Don't go backwards to a costly and waste filled future

Hobsons Bay: Don't go backwards to a costly and waste filled future
The issue
We the undersigned ask that Hobsons Bay City Council:
- rescind (or overturn) the decision made on the 29th of June, 2021, to reinstate weekly garbage collection and to reduce the FOGO collection to fortnightly,
- listen to the positive community feedback from the statistically valid community survey
- find a better, affordable and sustainable solution for those households who need more than a 120L bin with a fortnightly collection,
- Continue to advocate to reduce waste and assist households to adjust to the waste service.
Background
Hobsons Bay has led the way for local government and was the first in the transition to the four Bin system. People are proud of what we have achieved. The one year review of the new kerbside collection services showed that 86 per cent of people rated the service as good or very good. And, we are celebrating a reduction in waste to landfill of 33 per cent.
People told Council that there is a need for improvement, but going backwards to a weekly collection is not wanted. Less than 15 per cent preferred the expensive option of returning to when asked in the survey.
People also said that they are extremely happy with the weekly Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) service. A reduction to fortnightly is a smelly and unwanted change.
A weekly service would see landfill volumes increase again and costs to residents and ratepayers would skyrocket, along with the landfill levy.
Don't just sign this petition also email Hobsons Bay Councillors to ask them to rescind this motion. We need just one of these Councillors to change their mind and rescind the motion -

Kerbside waste and recycling service reviewed as “very good”
Hobsons Bay City Council has released the findings of its one-year kerbside waste and recycling review with more than 6,000 responses. Eighty-six per cent of our households reported being satisfied overall with the four-bin service while also recommending key areas of improvement.
The four-bin waste and recycling service, which launched in February 2020, introduced significant change to Hobsons Bay’s kerbside waste service. The changes included introducing food organics and garden organics collections (FOGO) to all households, a new dedicated glass bin, revised frequency of general rubbish collections and accepting only items that have a local end market in the comingled recycling stream.
The review, which was conducted through a statistically representative phone survey of 500 residents and an opt-in survey sent to every household and ratepayer in Hobsons Bay, saw the majority of respondents report “good” to “very good” satisfaction levels with the overall service, the average rating being 7.4 out of 10.
In its first year, the kerbside waste and recycling service:
- reduced landfill by 33 per cent (7,000 tonnes)
- increased FOGO by 124 per cent (9,500 tonnes)
- increased comingled recycling by 11 per cent (once adjusted for glass)
- highlighted contamination issues in the comingled stream
- introduced a dedicated glass recycling stream, collecting 2,968 tonnes with contamination rates of less than 5 per cent
