Joanna King started this petition to HOA of Wakefield Plantation

This letter is a call for our community to begin to think outside of the box. As you are aware our neighborhood is called Wakefield Plantation. The word Plantation automatically denotes negative history, emotions and thoughts- slavery, people being hung, raped and beaten. Personally, that name does not represent the beautiful community where we live. Ironically enough, the land that our community was built on was not even used as a plantation however our neighborhood is called Wakefield Plantation.

Would it  be a struggle to agree that there are a plethora of words that can be used to replace Plantation in Wakefield Plantation? I am writing this newsletter to ask our community to think creatively and to consider  all demographics of peoplerepresented in our community and join with me with this proposal to agree with changing the name of our community to remove Plantation.

The first step in changing the name is receiving 2/3 votes from all households associated with Wakefield. I have created a 3 question survey to gauge the community’s overall thoughts about this matter and for suggestions of other names to replace Plantation with. If you are interested, please email me at antiplantation@gmail.com and I will send the link for the survey. Following the response of the community we will take the next step forward in removal of the name Plantation.

The board has stated  that is in the best interest of the community to not change. However the majority of the community is not aware of this proposal. The board did state we would need 2/3 vote of all the homeowners to agree with changing the name to proceed to the next step. The next step will then be finding out from the board the monetary amount needed to change all of the signs.

If you have any questions, thoughts, ideas on this matter please feel free to shoot me an email at antiplantation@gmail.com
