We call on the Egyptian government to immediately release Hisham Omar Abd Al-Nazir Hassan, a member of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, who was beaten, arrested, and sentenced to two years in prison and a year of probation served in the police station, because of his belief in our religion and because of his sexual orientation. 

 

The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, which is now working with international human rights organizations such as Amnesty International on this case, considers this to be a flagrant violation of freedom of belief and of human rights principles enshrined in the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 18 of which stipulates that “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance.” The second article of the same declaration states that “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind.” 

 

Hisham Omar’s family reported Hisham’s disappearance for about a week. After strenuous attempts to find out his whereabouts, and going to hospitals and police stations all over the capital to search for him, and after the police stations remained silent and refused to reveal his whereabouts, Hisham’s family received a call on the 2nd of November, informing them that Hisham had been tried and was sentenced to two years in prison. After filing for an appeal, the court decided on December 20th, not only to reject the appeal but to give Hisham the maximum penalty, which is two years in prison with a year of probation served in the police station. This is in addition to the beatings, insults, and humiliation Hisham was subjected to in the police stations. 

 

The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light is an officially recognized religion followed by thousands around the world. It is also an officially registered religious organization in the United States of America, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. We reject all forms of persecution, discrimination, and intimidation to which our members in the Middle East and North Africa are subjected, and we affirm that we welcome all human beings in our congregation, regardless of their background, nationality, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, for no one has the right to hold anyone to account except God. 

 

We will not be silent until Hisham and all the victims of human rights violations are released, not only in these countries but everywhere around the world.

 

نطالب الحكومة المصرية بالإفراج الفوري عن هشام عمر عبد النظير حسن، وهو أحد أعضاء دين السلام والنور الأحمدي والذي تعرض للضرب وتم إلقاء القبض عليه وحُكم عليه بالسجن لمدة عامين وعام مراقبة، وذلك بسبب إيمانه بدين السلام والنور الأحمدي وبسبب كونه مثلي الجنسية.

 

دين السلام والنور الأحمدي، والذي يعمل الآن مع منظمات حقوقية مثل منظمة العفو الدولية في هذه القضية، يعتبر أن هذا الإجراء هو تعدياً صارخاً على حرية المعتقد ومبادئ حقوق الإنسان التي رسخها الإعلان العالمي لحقوق الإنسان، وقد نصت المادة ١٨ منه على أن "لكل فرد الحق في حرية الفكر والضمير والدين؛ ويشمل هذا الحق حريته في تغيير دينه أو معتقده، والحرية، سواء بمفرده أو في جماعة، علانية أو على نحو خاص، في إظهار دينه أو معتقده بالتعليم والممارسة والتعبد وإقامة الشعائر". أما المادة الثانية من نفس الإعلان فقد نصت على أن "لكلِّ إنسان حقُّ التمتُّع بجميع الحقوق والحرِّيات المذكورة في هذا الإعلان، دونما تمييز من أيِّ نوع". 

 

فوجئت عائلة هشام عمر باختفاء هشام وانقطاع كل الأخبار عنه لقرابة أسبوع.  وبعد محاولات ضانية لمعرفة مكانه، وتوجه الأهل والأصدقاء للمستشفيات وأقسام الشرطة في كل أنحاء العاصمة للبحث عنه، وبعد التزام أقسام الشرطة الصمت ورفضهم البوح عن مكانه، تلقت عائلة هشام إتصالاً يوم ٢ نوفمبر جاء فيه أنه تمت محاكمته وحُكم عليه بالسجن لمدة عامين، وبعد الطعن في الحكم يوم ٢٠ ديسمبر أكدت المحكمة الحكم بل أعطت هشام العقوبة الأقصى وهي عامين في السجن مع عام مراقبة، هذا فضلا عن ما تعرض له هشام من ضرب وسب وإهانة في أقسام الشرطة.

 

دين السلام والنور الأحمدي هي ديانة معترف بها رسمياً ويتبعها الآلاف في جميع أنحاء العالم، كما أنها منظمة دينية مسجلة رسمياً في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية والاتحاد الأوروبي والمملكة المتحدة. نرفض كل أشكال الاضطهاد والتمييز والترهيب الذي يتعرض له أعضاؤنا في الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، ونؤكد على أننا نرحب بكل البشر في جمعنا بغض النظر عن خلفياتهم أو جنسياتهم أو عرقهم أو ميولهم الجنسية، فليس لأحد أن يحاسب أحد إلا رب العباد.

 

ولن نسكت إلى أن يتم الإفراج عن هشام وكل ضحايا إنتهاكات حقوق الإنسان ليس فقط في هذه البلدان بل في العالم أجمع.
