This Monday, August 2nd, 2021 the city of Hillsdale, MI will be debating and voting on a petition to pass anti abortion laws and make the city a “sanctuary city” to the unborn.

While Roe V. Wade currently affords us protections and supersedes these laws, every major movement in history has started with local laws, then state laws, and eventually federal change. If we want to protect our rights we have to act NOW! The organization behind this legislation has already lead to passage in 33 of the 44 municipalities that have tried. Even if you aren’t a resident of Hillsdale, this effects all of us as the more of these laws are passed, the closer we come to losing our rights at the federal level.

These types of laws not only effect a woman’s right to choose (though Hillsdale itself does not have any clinics that perform elective abortions), they also limit access to life saving procedures in emergencies at the only hospital serving the entire county of over 46k residents. These laws also make any spontaneous miscarriage open to investigation and prosecution, at a time when many women are already suffering feelings of inadequacy and failure wondering what they did wrong to lead to the loss of their pregnancy. This ordinance would serve to ban “abortion inducing drugs” from even being mailed into the city, despite misopristol being used regularly in labor induction. This ordinance is flat out dangerous and needs to be stopped here, and in other cities it’s author are coming to next. 

Please join us for a peaceful protest at the council meeting if able and sign the petition, even if you are not a resident of the City of Hillsdale. We need to send a clear message that we will not tolerate these laws being passed at any level.
