Evana Geering started this petition to Hills Shire Council and

The residents of Gables, Box Hill and surrounds have been seeking an upgrade of the intersection of Old Pitt Town Rd, Terry Rd and Fontana Drive since 2019. Residents have been witness to many serious accidents at the intersection and are seeking an urgent upgrade in the form of a temporary roundabout while we await approval and construction of traffic lights.

Why is it so dangerous?

There are several issues that have been determined by residents that may contribute to the excessive amount of serious accidents at this intersection.

•The right hand turning lanes from Old Pitt Town Rd into Fontana Drive (westbound) and Old Pitt Town Rd into Terry Rd (eastbound) overlap for a significant distance. This means that if there are cars waiting to turn in both lanes, one or both must cross over and travel on the wrong side of the road in order to complete their turn. Visibility in order to do this is usually blocked by the other vehicle.

• Visibility for cars awaiting to cross straight through from Fontana/Terry can be impeded by cars or trucks waiting to turn right onto OPT road.

•Speed- cars exceeding the speed limit when travelling on OPT road can approach the intersection quickly, particularly as they round the corner on approach travelling eastbound. This coupled with slow driver take offs from a stationary position on an incline from Fontana and Terry can make it difficult to clear the intersection safely.

•driver impatience- given the increasing amount of residential traffic as well as a large amount of construction traffic, drivers are becoming impatient awaiting a clear gap and are taking more risks than usual

Why is this so urgent?

Residents have brought this to councils attention in the past and a Stop sign was erected on both Terry and Fontana. This seemed to help, however recent severe accidents have proven that the intersection is still posing a serious risk to the community.

Santa Sophia is due to open in October 2021 and many residents were of the belief that this intersection would be upgraded prior to this (either a temporary roundabout or traffic light installation). Recent councillor updates together with another serious accident has brought to light that this is not the case. At this stage it appears council will not fund a temporary solution while we await traffic lights that are still in the planning stage.

The opening of Santa Sophia will see a large increase of parents navigating this unfamiliar intersection in peak times while trying to get their children to school on time. This poses a real concern to the community of the safety of not only the residents but now also the parents and children attending this school.

We ask that The Hills Shire Council does not wait for a fatality to action this issue.

Thank you
