Today the Family Court Judge's have been named and quite right too. Justice must be open and transparent.
10 year old Sara Sharif's horrific murder was preventable.
By the time Sara Sharif died, she had suffered more than 25 broken bones - 100 separate internal and external injuries - including a traumatic brain injury. Sara was failed by police, social workers, the courts and the Judges.
The risks were undoubtedly known to the senior judge who presided over all three family court cases and when Sara’s abusive father applied for her to live with him, the judge ultimately sanctioned the order which delivered her into the hands of her killers. How did this happen?
Judge Alison Raeside presided over most hearings across 6.5 years. Judge Peter Nathan & Judge Sally Williams had some involvement - they are both retired now.
Judge Alison Raeside was promoted to the Designated Family Judge for Surrey in 2019.
Judge Raeside relied on the social workers risk assessment of the case.
The MOST concerning thing is that Urfan Sharif had been accused of domestic violence by THREE WOMEN & TWO CHILDREN. The police had been called multiple times due to the victims being burned, bitten & bruised in a catalogue of cruelty dating back 16 years and they DIDN’T BELIEVE HE WAS A RISK.
He was a ticking time bomb.
This was preventable.
When will serial domestic abusers and stalkers violent histories be joined up?
We keep being told this will happen but so far there is no evidence of change. When will they be arrested, charged and convicted for the harm that they cause?
What is being overlooked with Sara's case is that this was a spectacular risk assessment failure. Sharif was a serial domestic abuser & coercive controller who manipulated & controlled Sara & the professionals who should have protected Sara.
Men’s violent & controlling histories must be joined up or risk assessments will continue to be flawed resulting in catastrophic decisions & outcomes like Sara’s case.
In Sara's name WRITE to your MP & the Home Secretary YVETTE COOPER.
- ASK that each police service identify 10-20 serial and HIGH risk stalkers and domestic abusers, that they are referred to the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements and that they are included on the same database as sex offenders and terrorists and are problem solved.
- their history joined up in the Family Court System and the criminal justice system, and;
- all professionals working with child and adult victims of domestic abuse, coercive control and stalking need urgent accredited training in the Domestic Abuse Stalking & Harassment and Honour Based Violence Risk (DASH) Risk, Identification, Assessment and Management Model
