WHY is Toronto’s High Park being closed to vehicles access?

Some comments from the 18,766 who signed the line Petion to stop 7 days a week closure of vehicles into High Park .

“Greetings, My family and myself have been visiting High Park for the last 25 years. Over two decades now we have had many family picnics there; played tennis, skated, swam, hiked, skated on the pond etc...Many of those activities would not have been possible without the ability to drive there, park the car and venture further to do our activities. Unless one lives very close by accessing the park without the ability to drive to it (finding parking in the area with the number of so many new condos in the vicinity is next to impossible as I recently discovered myself). As a resident of Toronto of many years and a taxpayer, I think voices of people like myself should also be considered before the Mayor and the City Council decide on making High Park inaccessible for many permanently.

I have a garden plot in the allotment gardens in High Park. We need access to bring our supplies in and out of the garden. As well as being able to carry our crops home with us.

My spouse is just shy of wheel chair bound. We drive to various areas of the and find a place to sit near the car. Please don't take this away from us.

This system makes it hard for families of big gatherings to come together It would be nice if they allowed people to park inside the park again

I’ve been a long to High Park goer. I have found the lack of cars has actually made the park more dangerous for runners, cyclists and pedestrians. It may be counterintuitive but with cars around everyone was required to be more aware of their surroundings, now people cross without looking both ways while cyclists and runners aren’t sure which lane they each belong in. All of this leads to constant confusion and a more unpredictable environment.

Both my wife and daughter have long-term illnesses that causes debilitating fatigue. They are limited to where they can go especially long distances so it has always been a highlight to go to High Park with them. If you close the park to vehicle access, we would not be able to visit the park.

Making High Park car less is a ridiculous choice. My mother at age 97 enjoyed the ride in and a walk around, perhaps tea then ride back.

I drive into the park when I take my 90 yr old friend for lunch at the grenadier and to admire the flower beds she can reach via a short stroll with her walker

It just makes so much sense to bring the parking back into the park. It’s very difficult to make the long track into the park with my limited mobility for other seniors like me for persons with disabilities.”

Please pass this on…
