Theme parks hold a special place in my heart and in the hearts of my family. For us, visiting theme parks is more than just an occasional outing—it's a cherished tradition that brings immense joy and creates unforgettable memories. However, recent changes in the Ride Access Pass system at Merlin Entertainments parks have turned these joyful experiences into stressful dilemmas.

My family includes two members who thrive on their theme park visits, however, they also live with hidden disabilities and neurodivergence. Until recently, the disability access queue allowed them to enjoy the parks without the overwhelming stress and health risks posed by standing in traditional queues for prolonged periods. Unfortunately, with Merlin’s decision to removing the “Difficulties with crowds” from the Ride Access Pass system, like many others, my family members now face the daunting prospect of queuing alongside everyone else, risking overwhelm, anxiety, and exacerbation of their health conditions—all of which could easily be mitigated with efficient and compassionate access solutions. Not to mention that now disabled guests with hidden disabilities will now not be able to alert ride and attraction staff that they need support during an evacuation or emergency which means that this is a serious safety issue.

Merlin Entertainments, a leader in providing thrilling experiences, must ensure that these experiences are accessible to everyone, including those with invisible disabilities and neurodivergencies. The newly implemented Ride Access Pass system should be reevaluated to incorporate feedback from the neurodivergent community and those with hidden disabilities. This is not merely an inconvenience; it is a significant barrier to access that requires immediate attention and action.

Statistics reveal that approximately 1 in 5 people live with some form of disability, many of which are not outwardly visible. By acknowledging this and making systemic changes, Merlin Entertainments can demonstrate commitment to inclusivity and equality for all visitors.

I am calling on Merlin Entertainments to reconsider their Ride Access Pass system. A comprehensive approach should include consultations with disability organizations and neurodivergence advocacy groups to co-create solutions that ensure all guests can navigate the parks safely and comfortably. Offering a dedicated accessibility liaison at each park and improving staff training on disability awareness could be effective components of this strategy.
