STONE MOUNTAIN CARVING REMOVAL/REPURPOSING

The Issue

Stone Mountain has a history rooted deeply in racism. Purchased in 1958 by the State of Georgia as a "Memorial to Confederacy", this beautiful natural wonder of granite has fallen victim to systemic capitalism and racism. The rock was declared forbidden to climb before the world of climbing evolved enough to find it. Now, beautiful area is abused year round, with "Snow mountain" destroying  the winter scenery, and summer laser/firework shows ON THE CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL have made it impossible to access the sheer face. This petition aims to abolish the capitalist infection in the park, alongside the marks of racism that have influenced the parks evolution. For starters, the confederate flag needs to come down. For a government sponsored park, this is just an unacceptable support of racism by our state government. The larger goal: REPURPOSE THE CARVING. The memorial (that was unveiled 100 years TO THE DAY after Lincoln was assassinated. This memorial depicts 3 confederate leaders, Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson. These are the worst of the worst of the confederacy. All three of these men stood with their lives for racism and slavery. I want to get rid of their faces, get them off the wall, and repurpose the sheer face of stone mountain to be a climbable face, incorporating natural features and also artificial holds bolted into the wall. This is a very accomplishable goal, as there have been routes established along the walls of dams and artificial ski slopes. Together, we can get rid of this racist mark and make stone mountain park a more natural recreation area!
