Declare a climate emergency in Hepburn Shire
This petition made change with 360 supporters!
We call on our elected representatives to declare a climate emergency in Hepburn Shire.
The 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report is clear: if the world is to keep global warming to 1.5°C, governments across the world, at all levels and in all jurisdictions must act now – incremental action is no longer adequate.
Further, the IPCC clearly warns that a failure to hold warming at 1.5°C will result in a substantial intensification of the events which are already in evidence across our Shire: an increase in the occurrence and risk of bushfires for a greater number of months; an increase in the prevalence and occurrence of drought conditions; substantially reduced rainfall; an increase in extreme and unpredictable severe weather events.
We must not underestimate the severe impacts of increasing global temperatures – on biodiversity; infrastructure; tourism; agriculture; industry; human and animal wellbeing, with the greatest impact on the most vulnerable people in our communities.
We ask Hepburn Shire to join more than 800 other local government authorities in Victoria, Australia and across the world, by passing a motion which recognises that we are in a climate emergency, acknowledges that emergency action is needed by all levels of government, and commits to strong action.
Given Hepburn’s existing commitment to fighting the effects of climate change, the declaration would be an act of solidarity with the citizens, groups and other local governments around the world who are pushing for a large-scale response. Every council that makes a declaration and begins taking emergency action at a local level puts further pressure on higher levels of government to do the same.
We ask Council to please lend your voices to this movement, which has the potential to create the widespread change that we need to see to meet the climate emergency head-on.
"I don’t want your hope [...] I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house is on fire, because it is.”
