With the current COVID-19 crisis, healthcare is in desperate need of more nurses to benefit in the care of sick and immunocompromised patients. Being a senior nursing student at Greenville Technical College there have been major changes to our curriculum. Most schools have converted to an online lecture plan but as for hands-on clinical hours, students are unable to complete those.  Healthcare facilities are not allowing students in to be able to complete their clinical hours as required for graduation. This is majorly affecting our graduation date as we may not get to graduate within the next couple of months as planned. This, in turn, will not only affect my peers and myself in our future careers but will affect the healthcare world potentially worsening the already existing nursing shortage. Hundreds if not thousands of nursing students are preparing to graduate in May or July but with the current situation, that has been jeopardized greatly.

It is crucial for nursing programs during this pandemic to re-evaluate their requirements needed for graduation in addition to the NCLEX examination requirements. Schools should move forward with this change and allow senior nursing students who would be completing their program within the next 3-6 months to attempt the NCLEX one time. If those students are unsuccessful they would resume classes as scheduled. Senior nursing students should also be allowed to work as a nurse with a licensed nurse preceptor until they are able to successfully pass NCLEX. The current stipulation to graduate nurses has been placed back on schools, therefore requiring rigorous computer simulation to satisfy clinical hours when they should consider the time spent for those already working in the current COVID-19 healthcare crisis.

Now more than ever my fellow student nurses and I are eager to join the nursing field to assist in caring for those that have been affected by this worldwide pandemic.
