The Price of Forgiveness with Equality Now
Mar 16, 2016
Momentum continues at the highest levels! Yesterday, 'A Girl in the River' played to a packed house at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York City during the largest international gathering dedicated to women's rights and empowerment (annual UN's Commission on the Status of Women - CSW). Following a screening organized by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan, Equality Now and UN Women, the audience who came from all over the world heard from Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, Dr. Maleeha Lodhi, Global Executive Director, Yasmeen Hassan, and UN Women Executive Director, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. The response was amazing, and we couldn't be more thrilled. Dr. Lodhi spoke about the amazing Pakistani women, like Sharmeen, who are breaking the glass ceiling in Pakistan and how she was moved by the film. "There is a beauty to this film. She [Saba] is a survivor. It's an inspiring film." Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, who is also Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, also spoke about how important it is to change ALL of society and the importance of also educating boys and men if we really want to end violence against women and girls. Saba is continuing to inspire people and we know change is coming. Please keep on spreading the word - we want to get to 50,000 signatures before CSW end at the end of next week. Thank you!!!
