Help Lower Urban Sprawl in Caledon East

The Issue

There is a problem spreading through our small little town of Caledon East which is apart of the green belt. We are getting many new subdivisions and our farm town is turning into a city. We have many wonderful memories of a time when there was peaceful traffic and no new development. We are aware that this development will be happening. All we are trying to do is lower that amount of houses that will be coming in the Castles and Villas of Caledon. There will be around 520 new units in the subdivision coming to Caledon.

This is not just a problem in Caledon East other towns are getting farmland replaced with subdivisions. Fields of greenery are being replaced with more and more houses. Why do people want this it does not help our town very much. Out of all the things that these subdivisions bring only 16.66% of it is positive. This means that mean that 83.34% of them are bad. Our principal, believes that we should balance urban development with the need for green spaces and that we need to make room for a growing population but we need to plan about it first and not do anything drastic to turn it into an urban sprawl.

Some people would think that more people are good for a town. More people provide more jobs for businesses, but in Caledon there aren't any jobs or businesses. All the businesses that open in Caledon East don't last long. People who live in Caledon and most towns have to drive a long way to get to their work. This creates horrible commute in mornings and afternoons and increases the amount of car accidents and pollution. People also tend to walk less in cities and if Caledon becomes one then the citizens will be less active.

Urban sprawl also destroys animal's homes for example birds will lose their nest’s. In recent months when dumpster trucks and bulldozers started moving into the field area people have been finding above average amounts of foxes and other animals in their backyards. Animal crossing signs have also been put up on the street. If these subdivisions are put in we will be losing many of the bee habitats in Caledon. Bees provided a third of our food supply. If we add these subdivisions we will be gaining people but losing food! The animals don't have a voice they can't stop their homes from being destroyed.

In the field of Castles of Caledon there are tall, beautiful, old, trees. These trees clean our air and reduce pollution. Not only that but they are beautiful to look at in all seasons. Urban sprawl also pollutes our waters, habitats to fish like salmon and aquatic plants.

The Ontario Municipal Board made the decision to put these subdivisions into our little town. But the board doesn’t know who and what lives here. What does the board know about Caledon East and what we do? They aren’t the ones living here. Watching the beautiful landscape being replaced with big ugly buildings. The ministry of Ontario is making our small town into a dangerous city. Why is the government not letting the fact that Caledon is apart of the green belt stop them from building houses on that land?

If you made it this far that means you care about this topic and that you can do something about it. We know that having these subdivisions is inevitable and it is too late to stop construction but  we hope that we can bring down the amount of space that they destroy with these subdivisions. If you believe that this isn’t right then speak out by signing this petition. The citizen's voices must be heard.
