Help stop the senseless removal of native trees for "Coastal Views" in Waverley
The issue
As a proud Waverley resident, I’m deeply concerned about Waverley Council’s decision to remove native trees and coastal vegetation along the whole of Myuna Road and in the Northern Coastal Reserves. This move undermines the Council’s own Urban Greening and Cooling Strategy and does not reflect the values of our community.
These trees — including mature Tuckeroo's, Coastal Banksias and Acacias, which are healthy public assets. They provide beauty, shade, cooling, and critical habitat for native wildlife. Their removal is being justified for improved coastal and harbour views, which is not a valid reason to cut down ecologically important vegetation.
With ongoing development already pushing small birds like the Superb Fairy-wren to the coastal fringe, these last pockets of habitat are more important than ever. Removing them risks accelerating biodiversity loss in an area where green space is already scarce.
Waverley’s coastal and street trees are part of what makes this place special. Losing them diminishes our landscape, our identity, and our environmental resilience.
We collectively urge Waverley Council to halt the planned removals and engage openly with residents to find solutions that prioritise ecological health and community interest.
If you care about protecting Waverley’s natural beauty and biodiversity, please join us. Sign this petition and help ensure these native trees are protected for future generations.
