Help Stop Seaworld
The Issue
There have been many reports about Seaworld mistreating their animals. From animals killing employees to physical and even sexual abuse. Keeping animals in captivity that aren’t supposed to be there, shortens their lifespan extremely.
Tilikum, also given the name Killer Whale, was an inhabitant of Seaworld for 33 years. He was captured from Iceland in 1981 when he was just two. After he was captured he was held in a cement holding tank for about a year. In many pictures you can see Tilikum and other whales scratched and bleeding from mistreatment and bullying from other whales. Most Orcas at Seaworld had or have bent dorsal fins, this is most likely the result of lack of free space in enclosures, long periods of time floating at the top, and unnatural diet. When the animals would do something wrong they would usually be punished by not being fed for a week. Tilikum had 21 offspring, imagine having 21 children. One of the workers said,”He is worth millions(around $5 million), and he represents the future breeding program of Seaworld.” Food was withheld from Tilikum as a training technique, and he regularly endured painful attacks by two dominant female orcas. Tilikum died in a barren tank on January 6, 2017, this means he was 27. Male orcas should live up to 60-70 years. He was forced to perform every hour, eight times a day, seven days a week. The constant stress and exhaustion gave him stomach ulcers. When the park closed at the end of each day, Tilikum and the two dominant females were crammed into a tiny, round metal-sided tank for more than 14 hours until the park reopened the next morning. On February 21, 1991 Trainer Keltie Byrne fell into the pool containing all three orcas. She was pulled to the bottom of the enclosure by Tilikum, tossed around among the three orcas, and ultimately drowned. It took Sealand employees two hours to recover her body from the orcas. She was the first of three people to be killed because of Tilikum’s confinement, stress, and frustration. Shortly after Byrne’s death, Sealand closed its doors for good and put Tilikum up for sale as though he were nothing more than a commodity. Seaworld officials quickly purchased Tilikum for the Marine Park’s breeding program, apparently giving little thought to his reputation for aggression and killing. Now 54% of the orcas at Seaworld contain his genes.
Seaworld cares more about parking than the animal enclosures. SeaWorld continued buying orcas who were taken from their families. Its orca hunter even hired divers to cut open the stomachs of five orcas, fill them with rocks, and put anchors around their tails in order to sink them to the bottom of the ocean so that their deaths wouldn’t be discovered. Abducted at 1 year old, an orca named Kasatka was imprisoned by SeaWorld in a tank for nearly 40 years until she died.
An orca named Corky was abducted from her family and home as a baby, then impregnated over and over again six times with sperm from her own cousin. Today, she’s locked inside one of SeaWorld’s tiny tanks, swimming in endless circles, despite the hundreds of thousands of people who have called on the company to release her and her long-suffering orca brethren. Corky’s last baby was found dead at the bottom of a tank. Her family is still out there in the wild, but SeaWorld won’t return her to them. Workers made her perform up to eight shows a day, transferred her to different locations 14 times within eight years, used her for breeding, and took her children away. Today between 2 Seaworld facilities there are 14 orcas. In San Diego there are nine. Orlando, five. There are more than that. The way Seaworld separates orca pods in the wild is explosives.
Shamu was one of the most famous orcas Seaworld had. She was captured at 3 years old in 1965. When she was captured, whalers harpooned her mother and killed her, right in front of her. She was active from 1965 to 1971. She died on August 16, 1971 at 9 years old because of a uterine infection and blood poisoning. The internet claims that her body was either lost or destroyed, but she might be one of the five whales sunk with rocks and anchors. Because Shamu was very famous, Seaworld kept replacing her. They didn’t want anyone to know about her death. When the whalers harpooned her mother, she refused to leave her dead mom’s side. She was dragged away and sold to Seaworld, San Diego. She was deprived of food in order to learn tricks. Due to Shamu’s stress and overwork, she did something off of pure instinct. In 1971, Secretary Annette Eckis was instructed to ride off of Shamu’s back for a televised publicity stunt. However, she fell off of Shamu’s back and when she did, the orca clamped her teeth into Eckis’ leg and refused to let go. A metal pole was shoved into Shamu’s mouth in order to pry her mouth open. Eckis who needed more than 100 stitches, sued and Shamu was retired from performances. Shamu was the start of the appalling Seaworld Orca Show.
Have you ever wondered what the seaworld breeding program is like? It is basically sexual abuse. The female animals are drugged, immobilized, and forcefully impregnated. Seaworld trainers masterbate male animals for sperm.
In 2011, Seaworld determined that the Emperor Penguins they had were to old to breed. Seaworld then headed to Cape Washington, Antarctica and captured 10 baby penguins and shipped them in PLASTIC CRATES. “But that isn’t that bad, its only temporary.” I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t like to be shipped by FedEx in plastic crates.
Three people have died at Seaworld. Dawn Brancheau, Keltie Byrne, and Daniel Dukes. Brancheau and Byrne were killed due to orca stress and confinement of Tilikum. However, Dukes was killed because of something he did. Keltie Byrne died of drowning by being pulled to the bottom of a pool and being tossed around by three orcas. Dawn Brancheau was killed due to fatal injuries during an orca show.
Daniel P. Dukes was killed by Tilikum on July 6, 1999. He died due to the cause of his cruel action. At night on that day, he escaped from jail. He snuck past the Seaworld security and was able to get into Tilikum’s enclosure. He was drowned that night. Dukes was killed by Tilikum for sexual harrassment. Tilikum was the one being harrassed. Animals can also be sexaully harassed. Terrible people like zoophiles-(people that feel sexual and romantic feeling towards animals)-exist.
I appreciate your time, and I hope you will reconsider supporting places like Seaworld.
