Many people would like to see something done with the CPI. Most just don’t want it at the cost of privatizing the Shinnecock Canal. That’s why the Beautification Association and the Hampton Civic Organization rescinded their support for this proposal. The Canal is dear to the hearts of Hampton Bays and Southampton residents, as is obvious from the comments at the public hearings and comments in the change.org petition. More than 500 people have signed the petition in just a few days. The Shinnecock Canal is our claim to fame, a focus for us and our visitors, a place we can point to with pride. It is part of our identity. It is special. Townhomes are not special. You mention Lars Clemenson’s seemingly indiscriminate support for anything that will bring money into the school budget. Townhouses can be built anywhere, they don’t have to be on the canal. I could respond point by point, but in fact this whole discussion is artificial. There is no natural connection between the CPI and the Shinnecock Canal. We shouldn’t be talking about saving the canal versus saving the CPI. Separate the properties. Rebuild the CPI if you want. Leave the Shinnecock Canal as resort waterfront business.
