Why there's appreciation for Councilwoman Fleming joining our conversation. Even though comments posted here don't agree that the end result, the rehabilitation of the Canoe Place Inn, is a fair trade justifying the means. That process entails changing the zoning designation to enable much more dense private development along the historic Shinnecock Canal then as of right to build.
We also agree with the developer, who said at last nights public hearing that open dialogue within the community has improved his application. However, the Town Council announced their vote for only ten additional days of public comment - no more open hearings.
Nine days from now, the public will no longer play a part in the conversation at Town Hall shaping this development where we live.
That dialogue can continue here because plans, at this point, still lack many details. Including proposed road changes: are additional traffic lights required for public safety?
Also, there's no consensus for changing what was public to private on the Canal. Nor public benefits required for the zone change to accomplish that.
We're asking for clarity on this proposed zoning change that contradicts public consensus reflected in studies and policies (since the 1999 Comprehensive Plan: http://www.southamptontownny.gov/393/1999-Comprehensive-Plan). How it promotes and accomplishes public health and safety which is our Town's number one goal? Also for additional public hearings to continue this discussion vital to our neighborhood.
