Help SPLASH Faraday Centre Open
The Issue
To whom it may concern,
We are Splash Child Care, a non-profit childcare organization dedicated to ensuring quality childcare for all children. We currently operate in three locations across our city, with two being in the North End and the third in Osborne. We are currently trying to open a third North End location out of Faraday Elementary School, which would provide essential, quality childcare in a community that has historically faced marginalization and lesser support than elsewhere in Winnipeg.
We followed all the steps to open the Faraday site and put the work in to get it done, but unfortunately we are being stonewalled with the final step: obtaining an operating grant. An operating grant creates the subsidies needed to run a non-profit daycare. It pays educator's wages, educational materials, and maintenance costs while subsidising a majority of a family's childcare fees, allowing families to only pay $10 a day per child. Without it, families would have to pay approximately four times more per child to give their children essential childcare. This is not fair or feasible for our families, and therefore, this grant is required for us to open.
We were expecting to receive this grant in August, allowing us to open the Faraday site before the following school year began. The Manitoba government told us that we could receive this grant once we complete our licensing requirements. We did this, and now we are being told that we must operate the site without the grant to obtain it. This would impact the children and their families with unjust costs as mentioned above. Further, we must open the site within four weeks of obtaining licensing or we risk losing said licensing and being set back even further.
This has created an impossible dilemma, and is why we need your help in signing this petition. With enough support, we hope to shed light on this situation and create change to deliver affordable, quality childcare to every child. Every day we stand in limbo is a day a child in the North End that does not receive the care they deserve, all the while a parent struggles to balance their job with their child. This impossible problem is entirely avoidable if we obtain the grant we have completed all the steps for.
We humbly ask that you sign this petition to help obtain our operating grant and give our children the care they deserve.
