Help save visual anthropology at Goldsmiths

The Issue

We, the students of the Anthropology Department at Goldsmiths, are writing to express our profound concern regarding the potential redundancy of Christopher Wright and also any potential redundancy staff members in Anthropology Department. As a dedicated educator, Chris is an indispensable member of our department, particularly in the realm of visual anthropology.

Christopher Wright has immensely enriched our academic experience through his unique contributions and innovative approaches. His work in integrating art and anthropology has added a distinct and commendable dimension to our studies.

  1. Key Contributions

    * Christopher Wright has been instrumental in developing our entire Visual Anthropology curriculum in collaboration with his colleagues. He has designed and delivered modules such as BA Anthropology & Visual Practice(1st, 2nd and 3rd) as well as PhD programs in Visual Anthropology. Additionally, he is actively involved in the Visual Anthropology research unit, where he introduces creative methodologies in contemporary anthropological practice.

    * He teaches both theoretical and practice-based modules in visual anthropology, guiding students to explore a wide range of creative possibilities using audiovisual media within an anthropological framework. His dedication to collaborating with students as they develop their own working practices is invaluable.

  2.  Unique Offering: BA in Anthropology & Visual Practice

    * Goldsmiths is the only institution in the UK to offer this unique cross-disciplinary course. This program encourages students to develop essential digital production skills while integrating key anthropological concepts. The combination of these disciplines at Goldsmiths provides a distinctive education that addresses contemporary cultural issues and empowers students to intervene in real-life domains. There truly is nowhere like Goldsmiths for cultivating a deep understanding of these complex and sharp topics: globalization, colonisation, gender, race and so on.

    * The potential redundancy of Christopher Wright poses a grave threat to the continuity and integrity of our Visual Anthropology program. His departure would severely undermine this unique and pioneering area of study at Goldsmiths. Without his expertise and leadership, the program's ability to provide a comprehensive and innovative education in visual anthropology would be critically compromised.

    * The potential loss of Christopher Wright would be a tremendous blow to our department and the future of this pioneering program. His expertise, passion, and commitment are crucial to maintaining the high standards of education and innovation that define our institution.
