The Issue

Monk seals, the once-thriving marine mammals native to the warm waters of the Pacific and the Caribbean, are slowly vanishing before our very eyes. For years, these magnificent creatures have been a critical part of our oceans' ecosystems, contributing to biodiversity and the health of our marine environments. Yet today, they face unprecedented threats that are driving them toward extinction.

Over the decades, human activities such as habitat destruction, overfishing, and pollution have decimated monk seal populations. The Hawaiian monk seal, in particular, is critically endangered, with only about 1,400 individuals remaining. Climate change also plays a significant role, altering the seals' natural habitats and causing food scarcity.

It's crucial that we take immediate and meaningful action to address these threats. We are calling on local governments, environmental organizations, and the international community to collaborate on a comprehensive plan to protect monk seals. This includes establishing more marine protected areas, implementing stricter fishing regulations, and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

Furthermore, raising public awareness is vital for the success of conservation efforts. We need educational campaigns to inform the public about the importance of monk seals and the plight they face. Only through joint efforts can we hope to reverse the decline of monk seal populations and ensure their survival for future generations.

I love monk seals and I want to know more and more about them every single day. These seals are so cute. So we made petitions to save them from going extinct and we have a profound admiration for monk seals and I Grady O’Donnell even made the senates of hawaii my decision makers and they are trying to stop monk seals from going extinct as fast as they can they are trying to stop monk seals from getting disease and going extenct there are 4 to 6 deaths of  monk seals a day. so I think we should pray for them because there are approximately 1,600 Hawaiian monk seals left so can we please all  pray for them and there are possibly 480 days left until they go extinct.

September was a good month for this seal, as the juvenile male seal was released back to the wild after a life-saving procedure.

In late August, the hospital for seals received multiple calls from community members who reported a fishing line trailing from the seal’s mouth. they quickly assembled a rescue team with partners from the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources, The Marine Mammal Center, and community volunteers. On site, they confirmed the seal had likely swallowed a fishing hook and needed medical intervention. The Center coordinated emergency transport via Mauna Loa Helicopters to Ke Kai Ola, the Center’s Hawaiian monk seal hospital in Kona, Hawaiʻi Island.

Thankfully the hook removal procedure went well, and the seal was released back on Kauaʻi in early September!

Incidents like the seal’s, as well as the untimely recent death of 2-year-old female seal, show the importance of reporting hooked seals as soon as possible.

Hawaiian monk seals are naturally curious and opportunistic feeders. Unfortunately, sometimes easy-looking meals come with strings attached—like a fishing line and hook. These unintentional hookings are a risk that comes with shared ocean spaces—and one we all can reduce together with awareness and quick action.
