Help Save Baby Hatchling Sea Turtles from certain death in Nassau County& Fernandina Beach
The Issue
How many Baby Hatchling Sea Turtles could potentially DIE again this year in Nassau County, Florida and the City of Fernandina Beach, Florida because they're refusing to abide by the FWC and DEP guidelines to update their decade old outdate Sea Turtle Lighting Ordinances? A new sea turtle nesting season is less than a month away and we need this new FWC approved Sea Turtle Lighting Ordinance passed ASAP. How many baby sea turtles have to die year after year in Florida do to Light Pollution? We need to pass this Ordinance and Help PROTECT sea turtles from heading the wrong way to their sure demise and ultimate death?
That is inconceivable and irresponsible that a county and city is refusing this small request for helping our majestic sea turtles that call our beautiful beaches their home. Believe it or not, we have been waiting for years and even was promised the Ordinance would be update would come in 2020/21. We are calling on Nassau County and the City of Fernandina Beach to do the right thing to help protect and save the baby hatchling sea turtles from dying by passing an up to day Sea Turtle Lighting Ordinance.
- After hatching, baby sea turtles head to the brightest light they see. Under normal conditions this instinct directs them to the glare of the moon and stars, which in turn leads the baby hatchling sea turtles to the ocean. However, Light Pollution (artificial lights) from businesses and beachfront houses, will confuse the baby turtles and cause them to head in the wrong direction. When these baby turtles head away from the ocean and to artificial lights, they lose their chance of survival.
- To prevent sea turtle deaths caused by Light Pollution confusion, light ordinances require that businesses and beachfront houses have sea turtle friendly lighting. Ordinances like these prevent thousands of sea turtle deaths each year in Florida. We have seen the effects of illegal lights firsthand and unfortunately we have seen many bodies of dead baby sea turtles stuck in our sand dunes, walking down our roads, in our parking lots and even in condo pools because of illegal lights from our beaches. This becomes all the more frustrating because there is a simple solution to end this tragedy.
We need YOUR prayers and support by sharing this petition on your social media, to help get the word out! Become the voice for these DYING baby hatchling sea turtles that do not have a voice to cry out in pain after going the wrong way but this petition can be their voice. We will not stop until every sea turtle that hatches on our beach, has every chance to make it to the Atlantic Ocean and be that 1%.
