Almost a year ago now, a mere 20-30 minutes from the same place where Taira was sentenced to 40 years for the same type of incident, Scottie Scheffler had charges dismissed. He knowingly drove past an officers commands and as the officer was reaching in his car(same as in Taira’s case) the officer was struck and drug. This officers ripped pants show more evidence of being drug than any evidence in Taira’s case and Scottie admits he should’ve stopped, admitting he knowingly proceeded through a command and wantonly endangered the officer yet the prosecutor in this case just can’t bring themselves to pursue charges. Granted Scottie Scheffler hasn’t been in and out of trouble much of his adult life but that's not the point here. The point is that he committed the same offense, and walked free after a few hours in jail with no future court appearances while Taira has and will spend a good portion of her adult life. So, now, tell me what’s more absurd….that Scottie walked away with no charges or Taira sits with a 40 year sentence. I think we all know the answer to this. It seems to be less and less about justice in justice system and more about punitively punishing the poor, marginalized, downtrodden in society.
