The Issue

Taira Litsey, a woman with a tumultuous past, faces a 40 year sentence for what can be best described as an unfortunate incident. In an attempt to evade police in Bullitt County, Kentucky, she inadvertently injured an officer as he was reaching into her vehicle, an action that typically would warrant a 12 year sentence. Here, deeply embedded in our justice system, lies an unspeakable discrepancy. We, Taira's family, friends, and advocates for justice reform, seek to shed light on her story and ask for her sentence to be reviewed.

As Taira's significant other, this matter is deeply personal. I've been championing justice reform and it hurts to see Taira, someone who has endured multiple forms of abuse throughout her life including sexual, physical and emotional abuse as a young child where she first learned the behavior of “running away” from authority figures, receive what can be considered a near life sentence. She has made remarkable strides in improving her life and yearns to contribute positively to society and be an active part of her family's lives.

Our goal is to shed light on Taira's story, not to condone her actions, but to question the clear disproportionality of her punishment. It is crucial to establish that she has been classified as a persistent felony offender, which has significantly influenced her sentence length. A comparison with national statistics illustrates that her punishment is harsher than most sentences for murder, let alone assault.

It is imperative to examine the consistency and effectiveness of our legal system, which in this case, has handed down a sentence that seems more punitive than reformative. We must consider if its execution truly serves justice, or if it simply exacerbates the cyclic nature of crime and punishment.

We advocate for a review, a modification of Taira's sentence, driven by the belief that her punishment does not fit her crime. We ask you to join our call for justice and fairness. Please, sign this petition to aid in Taira Litsey's pursuit of a second chance.
