Yesterday marked yet another birthday that Taira is forced to spend behind bars, separated from her daughter—a painful reality that never gets easier. She has paid for her crimes, and then some, especially when you compare her time served to national sentencing trends. But what makes this even harder to accept is that her incarceration has never truly addressed the root causes of her past struggles.
Taira was always a strong candidate for rehabilitation. With the right medical care, proper therapy, and appropriate medication, she could have turned things around much sooner. But like so many others in the system, she was never given that chance. Even now, she only has access to the bare minimum services the prison offers. Despite these challenges, she has taken full responsibility for her past and committed herself to growth.
For over eight years, Taira has maintained a single room in the honors dorm—something that requires near-perfect behavior with little to no write-ups. This isn’t the same person who entered the system all those years ago. She’s grown, matured, and proven time and again that she’s ready to come home.
Her daughter shouldn’t have to celebrate another birthday without her mother. Taira shouldn’t have to continue serving time when the evidence of her rehabilitation is clear. It’s time to bring her home.
Please continue sharing and supporting this petition. Every voice matters in helping reunite Taira with her family.
