The issue

New Zealand is home to some of the most diverse animals and plants in the world, but our taonga including native species are at risk because of habitat loss, pollution, introduced predators, climate change, and human activity.

According to WWF-New Zealand, 94% of reptile species, 82% of bird species, 80% of bat species, 76% of freshwater species, 22% of marine mammal species, and 46% of vascular plant species are at risk.

One of the biggest problems is the loss of natural habitats. Forests are cleared, land is developed, and roads and farms take the place of the environments animals rely on. As a result, many animals have limited space to find food, water, a place to rest, and to raise their babies. Pollution, including plastic and harmful chemicals, resulting in damage to the places they call home.

As WGC students, we want to raise awareness about the threats facing New Zealand’s endangered wildlife and help our school community understand why protecting native species is important.

We are asking WGC students and teachers to support us by helping spread awareness about animal endangerment throughout our kura. This could encourage more students to learn about New Zealand’s endangered animals, the challenges they face daily, and why protecting them matters.
