Repeated threats to develop Eaglesham's surrounding greenbelt land look set to be realised with the publication of East Renfrewshire Council's proposed LDP3 plans, published September 2026.

Proposals to build 660 houses in an area that currently only has 1525 residencies is completely disproportionate to the needs and capabilities of this area and something that would drastically transform Scotland's first conservation village into a town.

Our fears are that the rural idyll would quickly become just another suburb that once built on, would continue to be developed, seeing Eaglesham lose its character, uniqueness and sense of place, quickly ceasing to be a village at all.

The village and surrounding area does not have the infrastructure or amenities to support such a development and is already struggling with the impact of the sizeable neighbouring Jackton development. The impact of a large-scale development, never mind one as big as that proposed in the LDP3, would be hugely detrimental.

The road infrastructure is already struggling, with the Bellecraig roundabout already featuring large tailbacks in all directions. The proposals do not feature an underpass due to, what was described at the time as, 'the visual impact it would have on the rural character of the area' and 'low traffic volumes' - a character these plans seek to destroy.

We strongly object to plans to develop the village in this way and urge those in authority to engage with the local community fully; to listen to our concerns; and stop kowtowing to developers and Holyrood diktat in this way.

Development on this scale, in such a short space of time and with such little consideration given the rural nature or the to infrastructure to support the vast development is irresponsible.

We want to see Eaglesham flourish and blossom, not become another urban landscape. 

We need to help to protecting and conserve Eaglesham, otherwise we will lose our village and way of life forever.
