We have an emergency, and we need your help. As temperatures plummet around the globe, we urgently need to install a heating system at our China shelter.
We care for over 700 dogs and cats rescued from the brutal dog meat trade. Many are now old and weak. We also have puppies and nursing mothers we recently rescued from unscrupulous butchers. Many come from Yulin Dog Meat Festival
Our shelter in China run by brave Mr Zhao has concrete floors and wire cages, and the only way we have to keep our pups warm is with donated blankets and quilts. As the snow falls and the temperature hits subzero, the brave rescues must huddle together, and often, the bedding gets wet and damp. Even our cats in their room have no heating. Every morning, Mr Zhao has to break the ice of the water bowls, and he is desperately worried for the most fragile in our care.
In the past, we had a diesel system that broke down, and then we used reversible air conditioning where we could, but last year's horrific floods put paid to that.
We can not risk another winter without any heating.
The cheapest and safest way is to repair kennels/ build ventilation, and put in large pellet heaters, which Mr Zhao and our few workers will top up with pellets every 7/8 hours.
It is still very expensive, but this system is safe for the dogs. Each heater is placed in a different part of our base.
In total, we need 30 heaters, and they cost 2550 RMB each. That is about $350 a piece.Then we need the fuel and the building/ installation work. We have worked out that to install the heaters properly, make repairs and buy a winter load of pellets; we need about 195,000RMB ( about $25000) to make this happen.
We know this is a massive amount. Any surplus we have will be used to buy nourishing food and replace blankets and beds. We will also start the installation slowly as soon as funds come in.
It's hard to rescue and even harder to care for the poor pups, and as much as we try to find them homes ( and we do), we can not forget the brave souls still waiting.
