Help make Women's Equality Day, March 8th, a Federal Holiday
The Issue
Women's equality is still not where it should be. Unofficially, Abigail Adams started the women's right movement on March 31st, 1776. On August 26, 1920 the 19th Amendment became law allowing women to vote. Nowhere in the constitution are women said to be equal to men. In 1972 there was an Equal Rights amendment, that stated that there could not be discrimination based on sex, that was approved by Congress to be sent to the states to be ratified but was never approved. Almost 250 years after Abigail Adams picked up her pen and unknowingly started the women's right's movement, women are still not even legally equal to men. Men that have the same college degrees as women still largely make more than women at the same level. The pay gap, especially with companies that do not have set and posted salaries, is huge. Women also have to overcome the "old boys" network where men like to mentor other men and bring them up instead of bringing up women. A woman's opinion's, thoughts, educations, future, and dreams are still thought of, by many people, as being less important than a man's. For many people a women's success is still determined by if she is/was married and if/how many children she has/had. That should not be the basis on whether a woman was successful. For most women, their body might not be as strong as a man's, but they are just as smart and capable as any man.
If things change, then more women will start seeing themselves as an equal counterpart to men, and men will start to see women as equal counterparts to them as well. Women will start to speak up for themselves and demand equal pay and to be treated equally in the workplace. Girls will grow up thinking and knowing that they are equal to men and carry that mindset to the workplace and into their relationships. Women will start being taken more serious in the workplace, and their success rate won't be determined by their marital status and whether they are a parent. Woman's Equality Day as a federal holiday would be another big jump for women's equality. This will hopefully be that needed step that will get the laws passed securing equality for women, and that there CANNOT be discrimination based sex.
In summary, Woman's Equality Day as a federal holiday would show how far women have come, will show our girls now how powerful they really are, and give our girls in the future confidence that they can achieve anything that they put their mind and heart into. It will also show our states and Congress that the constitution needs to change to include equality for women and that there cannot be discrimination based on sex. So much can be achieved by making Women's Equality Day a federal holiday. Please sign for your wife, sister, mother, daughter, granddaughter, female ancestors who were told no because they were female, and future female relatives. They deserve true equality.
